Jenn and Mike
My partner Mike and I have travelled and lived all across Canada and the world, to finally make it “all around the circle” home to Moretons Harbour. A few years ago we decided to make a big life change moving from the city and we couldn't be happier to be able to share our peaceful & very unique property with our guests. The Knight family roots began here in the 1800's and we are beyond grateful to be surrounded by the beautiful ocean, nature and family.
Moreton’s Harbour
Local tradition has it that Moreton’s Harbour was settled in the late 1700’s by Horwoods, Smalls, Woolfreys, Taylors, Osmonds, Bretts, Frenches and Knight’s. Between 1807 and 1818 there were 38 fishing rooms registered in the harbour, each of which included a home, gardens, and waterfront stages and stores. The first merchant to operate in Moreton’s Harbour was Thomas Colbourne of Dorset, England, from about 1807. In later years Moreton’s Harbours protected anchorage made it a center for fisheries and trade, The Taylor, French and Knight families all produced Master Shipwrights and the two largest fishery/supply firms in living memory were The Osmond Brothers with the second belonging to Joseph Knight, with supply firms bringing in goods in their own schooners as well as on the coastal steamers. The population of Moreton’s Harbour increased to 500 people by 1900, relying on an economy based on fishing for cod in inshore waters and on the Labrador Coast, sawmilling, and ship building. The schooners that fished the Labrador coast were also used in trading between Moreton’s Harbour and St. Johns.
